Mind-Body Connection

The mind/body connection interact has important implications for the way we view illness and treat disease. The mind/body connection model takes into account that physical health is influenced by thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and conversely, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can influence the physical symptoms.

Exactly how psychological and social factors, personal beliefs, and stress affect the development of disease continues to be studied. It is known, however, that the mind and body communicate constantly. What the mind thinks, perceives, and experiences is sent from our brain to the rest of the body.

Mind/body medicine techniques are those that can help you to take control of your life - how to use your own healing power to reduce stress and other negative behaviors and thoughts - and thus maintain or regain health.  Examples of mind body techniques are: meditation, guided imagery, relaxation training, deep breathing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, biofeedback, stress management, physical activity (such as Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates), and proper nutrition.

Research has shown that mind/body techniques can significantly improve our response to stress and boost the immune system, thus reducing the risk for diseases such as heart disease, auto-immune diseases, and cancer.  Studies on cancer patients who used mind-body techniques showed significant improvements in emotional expressiveness, quality of life, sense of control over health, and optimism.
